Sugar Cookies
This easy and versatile sugar cookie recipe serves as a foundation for various types of cookies, e.g. Tea Party cookies, Halloween cookies or Christmas cookies. Sugar Cookies Dough : Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2  tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 6 tbs (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup (1/3 stick) shortening
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbs whole milk
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • Any optional flavorings if desired, like lemon-lime, cinnamon or anise.

Step 1. Supplies needed for the sugar cookies: flour, baking powder, salt, butter, shortening, sugar, egg, milk, vanilla extract and any other optional flavorings.

Step 2. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl.  Set aside.

Step 3. Put the butter, sugar and shortening in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer on medium until creamy.

Step 4. It should take about 1 to 2 minutes to get the mixture fluffy.

Step 5. Time to mix the wet ingredients – whisk the egg, milk, vanilla and any other obtional flavorings you’d like to add at this point.

Step 6. Slowly add the egg mixture to the butter mixture and blend until mixture is smooth.

Step 7. Add the flour mixture and mix on low to incorporate both mixtures.

Step 8. Dough will be stiff and moist to the touch.

Step 9. Flatten dough out and wrap tightly in plastic.  Place in fridge for at least 3 hours or till it is firm enough to roll out without sticking.

Step 10. After the dough has chilled for a few hours, roll it out on a floured surface.  I just used the granite counter top and that works fine.  It also helped to add some flour to the top of the dough so it doesn’t stick to the rolling pin or I used a plastic wrap (see picture).  Roll out to about 1/8″ thickness.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Step 11. Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out the shapes and place on baking sheets that are lined with parchment sheets or foil.

Step 12. Bake cookies in the middle of oven rack for about 8 to 10 minutes.  Bake until edges are light brown.  Take out of the oven and let cool on wire rack.

Step 13. Use royal icing to decorate the cookies once they have cooled.  Experiment with different icing thickness, colors and designs.  The ideas are endless and if it doesn’t look good, just eat away the evidence!  That is the best part and in our household there is no lack of volunteers!

Step 14. Optionl: Add icing decorations like beads, embellishments, nonpareils, sparkle dust, etc. to dress up your cookies.

Step 15. Once the icing has dried and hardened, store cookies in sealed air-tight containers.
