Soft Chewy Pretzel Directions (12)

Step 1. Supplies needed – flour, oil, baking soda, salt, sugar, yeast, butter, coarse sea salt, water, cinnamon (optional), and brown sugar (optional).

Step 2. Measure 4 teaspoons of yeast into warm sugar water. Mix well and let sit aside for about 10 minutes. My daughter helped with the baking so here she is doing the measuring. Great project to do with kids.

Step 3. Measure dry ingredients – flour, sugar and salt. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add in the yeast liquid mixture and oil. Mix well. Use your hands to knead the dough. Add tablespoons of water if the mixture seems dry. Turn out onto glass or smooth surface and knead for 10 minutes. When the dough is well mixed and kneaded, place in an oiled bowl. Turn the dough to coat in the oil.

Step 4. Cover with plastic wrap and cover with a cloth to keep warm. Place in a warm place until double in size, about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 450 F (230 C).

Step 5. Take out dough and divide into 12 pieces.

Step 6. Roll each piece out into long rolls and form into a pretzel shape. Form all dough into pretzel shapes.

Step 7. Once all the dough has been shaped into pretzels, make baking soda mixture by mixing baking soda and hot water. Dip pretzels in the baking soda mixture briefly and place onto a baking tray that has been covered with a parchment sheet. Bake at 450 F (230 C) for about 8-10 minutes until brown. Take out of the oven and wait about 10 minutes.

Step 8. Melt butter and place in a bowl. Mix cinnamon and brown sugar in another small bowl. For cinnamon pretzels, brush on butter and then sprinkle on the cinnamon sugar mix liberally until it is covered. You can never have too much cinnamon sugar!

Step 9. Here is how the delicious cinnamon pretzel looks like fresh out of the oven.

Step 10. For salty pretzels, brush on melted butter and then sprinkle on the coarse sea salt or kosher salt. Now they are ready for the Oktoberfest Party! Wo is dast bier? Where is the beer?
