How To Make An Advent Calendar

Advent Calendar for Sunday School
Create your own Advent Calendar for a Classroom Party, Christmas Party, or as a craft project during Sunday School in Church. Kids enjoy making this craft project and by including a scripture, a poem, a new word, or a joke for each day, it can be a fun, learning experience for kids.

Advent Calendar Supplies (1 Calendar)

  • 12″x12″ Colored card stock in Holiday colors (2 pcs)
  • 10″x16″ Foam Core
  • Scissors
  • Paper cutter (optional)
  • Candy
  • Copy of the Scriptures
  • Glue
  • Ribbon
  • Paper clip

Advent Calendar Instructions

  1. Take two complimentary colors of 12″x12″ card stock and trim off 2″ so that you will have a 10″x12″ piece left. Glue onto foam core.
  2. Take a solid piece of card stock and trim to make one piece of 4″x10″. Glue to the top of the foam core.
  3. Let kids decorate the top part with words “Advent Calendar” and any decorations, drawings they want.
  4. Make strips of paper varying in widths from 1.5″ to 2.5″ wide. Use various colors. Make little tubes by gluing the ends together and using a paper clip to secure the ends together for a few seconds until the glue sticks. Make 25 for each day of December per calendar.
  5. Glue the tubes to the calendar. Let dry completely.
  6. Print out Scriptures and cut out strips. We made this for our Sunday School class but you can put in poems, new words, jokes, personal notes, etc. Another idea: You could also personalize this even more if you are making this with only a few kids by adding encouraging, self-esteem building words to brighten a child’s day. Highlight the child’s positive qualities and watch the kids beam with pride every morning they open open the calendar!
  7. Fill tubes with Hershey Kisses candy first and then with Scriptures.
  8. Cut out 25 squares approximately 3″x3″. Cut off all corners to form a hexagon.
  9. Close off the tubes by gluing the hexagon tops onto the tubes.
  10. Use a colored, gold or silver marker to write on the days of the month onto the tubes in a random fashion.
  11. Cut off a large piece of ribbon and attach to the back on both sides so that the Advent Calendar can be hung on the wall.
