Valentine woven heart basket in heart weave
 Create these Woven Paper Heart Baskets for Valentine’s and other Holiday Parties by weaving two colors of colored card stock in a basket weave pattern.  These heart baskets are a tradition during Victorian times and still popular for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day and I even found one to fit Chinese New Year!   The ones with patterns are a bit harder so if you have younger kids (ages 9 and under), I recommend sticking with the Original basket weave design.

Valentine Cards Supplies :

  • Construction paper in various colors.
  • Scissors
  • Printer

1. Woven Paper Heart Craft  – Traditional Heart Basket Weave:

  1. Print template out Original Basket Weave Template on red, pink or white (pick two).
  2. Fold the print out in half and cut out along dotted lines.
  3. To weave, hold the two pieces of colored paper at right angles from one another. Red heart on your right and pink on the left.
  4. Thread the two layers of the innermost right-hand strip (red), alternating around and through the two layers of each left-hand strip (pink). So in other words, first thread it around both layers of a pink strip, so it sandwiches them, then through the layers of the next pink strip, so it is sandwiched.
  5. For the next strip, continue the pattern until all strips are done.
  6. Attach an optional handle for a basket or use as table decor as is.

3. Woven Paper Heart Craft – St. Patrick’s Day Four Leaf Clover Basket Weave:

  1. Print template out St Patrick’s Day Clover Basket Weave Template on green and white.
  2. Follow the Steps 2-6 of the Traditional Heart Basket Instructions.

4. Woven Paper Heart Craft – Asian Ying and Yang Basket Weave:

  1. Print template out Ying and Yang Basket Weave Template on red, pink or black (pick two).
  2. Follow the Steps 2-6 of the Traditional Heart Basket Instructions.
  3. Tip: If you made this in all red, you can use this as a Hoang Pao or Red Packet for gift giving during Chinese New Year.

Print out template on colored card stock. Print out one of each color.

Start by weaving the white strip under the blue right strip. Then alternate the colors and weave the blue strip inside the white strip. Continue weaving the entire white strip to the end, then move on to the next white strip.

Finished weaving the second white strip. Make sure to stretch and smooth out the strip. Check your work by flipping the heart over to see that the colors on the other side are also woven correctly. Also if you have done it correctly the heart will open up like a basket.
